1) Be realistic.
As a kid, decisions are normally made for us by our parents or guardians. As we age, we start longing for the day we make our own decisions. When that time arrives, and the decisions we make lead to unfavorable outcomes, there is this tendency to wander, "what if I had chosen the other option instead of this option?" We imagine the elaborate fantasies of the other option(s) working better than the one we decided to choose. Then the reality of living our actual decision seizes us. Remorse is the punishment, but we must endure as we live our reality.
2) Embrace your decisions embrace your reality.
Gladiator meme. I guess you now know one of my favorite movies. :) |
We don't live out our lives backward. Time always moves forward, and we should make sure not to waist our time. It is fine to reflect on a decision to make better decisions in the future. However, when we keep thinking about our past decisions as failures with no positive outcomes, our minds are not free to make better decisions. The poem, "Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost is about the remorseful feeling that comes from looking back at decisions and wandering "what if I had done this?" Frost wrote the poem to his friend as a witty way to tease him about his indecisive and remorseful decision making tendencies.
3) Decide your path and go against the grain.
When fears of choosing prevent us from moving forward, we either stay were we are or run without looking forward. Then bam! We hit the another fork in the road and the process starts all over again. Don't let the fear of failing keep you from making decisions. Choose a direction. If you meet success in your path, then you are moving in a positive direction. Keep traveling that path until you think success moves to anther path of life you want to explore. If you have had failures then, slow down, and look around. If you are traveling on a crowded road, then success will probably come slower. Look for less crowed paths and decide the ones that are right for you in your current time in life. Maybe there is a chance you can create a new path for yourself. Whichever path you choose, just don't regret it. Learn from it and move on.
